Choose the wrong kick drum and you could be holding your track back from its true potential. Here are our tips on choosing the right kick: 1. Match the Kick to the Style. Groove on 16 notes. This drum pattern is used in hip-hop, rhythm and blues, funk, classic rock and other genres. 16 note groove is a loaded drum sampler with four hi-hats played for each bass and snare. These 16th notes are also known as semi-quavers and are significantly more difficult to play than 8th notes.

Largely influenced by house music but allowing for more variations in rhythm, garage often bases itself on chopped vocal samples and 130 bpm tempos.
One of the reasons "The Big Beat" is one of the most popular drum breaks of all time is its simplicity. It isn't cluttered with hi-hats.
